The Captain

Like the other reincarnations I have tried: Mossy Bridges, Plum Harajuku, and Damber Wabsolute, which I have the OGs of (albeit samples of MB), I had to try The Captain. I find Insider Parfums to be absolutely amazing at bringing back the discontinued Tom Ford top-shelf fragrances. They either give you an insight into what was, or it helps you preserve your originals if you're lucky enough.

You can see the Tom Ford influence but The Captain has developed genuine character of its own. The opening is slightly different, the dry-down is warmer. Not just an imitation. A proper interpretation with a point of view.

Not a synthetic approximation. The Captain uses cypress in a way that smells like the actual tree. That resinous, slightly bitter greenness is exactly right. My Italian friend confirmed it immediately. She said it smelled like home. Brilliant.

Sharp and fresh and unlikely to offend anyone. The Captain is exactly what a workplace fragrance should be. Noticeable enough to get the occasional comment, restrained enough that nobody is reaching for the window. Perfect office scent.

Getting ready to start the day properly. The Captain in the morning is the fragrance equivalent of a firm handshake and direct eye contact. Says everything about how you intend to approach the day. Brilliant ritual fragrance.

One spray on the chest and The Captain is present all day without ever becoming overwhelming. The concentration and quality of materials is evident. A little goes very far. Very economical as well as very good.

Thirteen hours from first spray to the last comment of the evening. The Captain doesn't fade. It evolves. Whatever phase you find it in is the right phase for that time of day. Excellent architecture.

Took a chance on a blind buy. Completely vindicated. The reviews promised clean green elegance and The Captain delivered exactly that. Insider Parfums' quality consistency is clearly reliable enough to buy blind. Good to know.

Hard to describe. The Captain makes you feel like you're breathing better. Standing straighter. Like the fresh green quality is doing something actual to your body as well as your mood. Genuinely invigorating. Very nice indeed.

Not trying to please everyone in the way that results in pleasing nobody. The Captain has strong character. And yet somehow most people who smell it like it. That combination of character and accessibility is genuinely rare.

I keep it in my bag specifically for beach days, boat trips, and coastal walks. The combination of sharp green cypress and the fresh quality underneath is exactly right for being near water. The Captain knows where it belongs.

He can't remember the name but he knows what it smells like and where to find it. Every time he visits he takes at least three sprays. I've started keeping it somewhere he can't easily access. Fair game.

First spray and the cypress is right there. No preamble. The Captain makes its nature known from the very start. Bold and green and confident. Very satisfying when a fragrance does exactly what it promises from the first second.

The fresh cypress of the morning gives way to something warmer and slightly resinous. The afternoon phase of The Captain is just as good as the morning phase. That's a rare quality. Usually frags peak early. This one sustains.

Spring through early autumn and The Captain is out constantly. The green freshness just fits warm weather perfectly. The resinous warmth underneath means it doesn't disappear in heat. Holds its own beautifully in summer. Excellent.

The Captain smells like the Italian coast without the tourist gift shop version of it. Something genuinely natural about the cypress. Clean, green, slightly bitter. Like standing in an actual cypress grove. Proper beautiful.

There's something barbershop-adjacent about the opening. Clean and sharp and slightly resinous. My barber commented when I came in. That's either very good or very embarrassing and I'm choosing to interpret it as very good.

Hiking in Wales wearing The Captain. Still present and fresh at the end of a long muddy day. The longevity for something so clean is impressive. And genuinely appropriate for the outdoors context. Highly recommend for active types.

Someone in the crew asked if I'd spritzed the sea air. When I said it was fragrance they were impressed. The Captain is genuinely appropriate for nautical contexts. Not by accident. Very well conceived product name.

I have twenty-eight bottles. Five of them get reached for regularly. The Captain is one of the five. That's the real measure of a fragrance. Not what you think of it in the abstract but how often you actually choose to wear it.

Some Tom Ford inspirations go quite intense. The Captain takes the concept and makes it accessible. Sharp and green and clean, with enough warmth underneath to keep it from being cold. Genuinely wearable version of the concept.
